WHAT'S GROWING THIS WINTER 2011-2012

Brighton Beach @KCC, November 30, 2011

CENTER STAGE

BEST

December 12th - December 18th

The first harvest of Romanesco ( ! ) could also be in the worst column because it hurt to harvest such a stunning plant.

WORST

The frosts are setting in this week. Last two harvest morning we observed ice forming on the leaves of all our unprotected crops.  This is good for some crops like collards and kale whose leaves actually taste sweeter.  We cover the root zone of these crops with straw and leaves to keep the ground protected from freezing.  but radish has thinner leaves tend to wilt after a frost.  We also noticed damage on the green savoy cabbage leaves where water pooled in the savoy wrinkles.

December 5th - December 11th
