The Story of Westside EATS @WSHS

This Project EATS site was built on the Edward R. Reynolds West Side High School campus which is located at Frederick Douglass Houses (FDH) on the upper west side of Manhattan.

Fall/Winter 2010

From the Fall of 2010 through the Spring of 2011, students from West Side High School farmed the site with Project EATS farmers learning basic skills raised-bed construction, soil preparation, seeding, watering, and harvesting. 

Winter/Spring 2011

During the spring, West Side High School students collaborated with students from Parsons The New School For Design to design labels and packaging for Project EATS vegetables and products.

Parsons Students also worked with youth and adults from Children's Aid Society programs at the Frederick Douglass Houses Community Center and the Seniors Program at Frederick Douglass Houses (FDH).

Middle and high school from the Community Center helped develop designs for a 2nd farm site at FDH and a weekly market stand for residents.

Seniors worked with Parsons and West Side HS students to design labels, packaging, farm sites and market stands.

Sping/Summer 2011

During the summer of 2011, faculty and students at the school maintained the WSHS site.
