WHAT ARE WE DOING WITH THOUSANDS OF LBS OF FOOD SCRAPS?
Its fall and Project EATS farmers are harvesting less and composting more. Arguably our most important harvest begins in late November and early December when we start collecting leaves, straw bales, horse manure, and food waste to feed our compost piles and mulch our beds.
After a long season of taking nutrients off the farm in the form of delicious produce we are now in the business of giving nutrients back to the soil.
More on Project EATS Composting.

STILL GROWING!
Brighton Beach @KCC, November 30, 2011
Shorter days. Cooler temperatures. Seasonal Crops. We will continue to farm at our sites throughout the winter. Crops will grow slower and there will be less to harvest. Yet, our work continues. Community farm and business skills in our neighborhoods will continue to develop this winter and be ready for the 2012 season.

RADISHES, COMPOST, & ARTISTS....OH MY!!
November 17, 2011
Artist Senga Nengudi was in town for a talk on her work and an opening of the exhibition Contemporary Art From The Collection at the Museum of Modern Art (thru February 17, 2012) which includes her installation, R.S.V.P. Visiting from Colorado Springs, Colorado, she took time to visit our Project EATS site @ Kingsborough Community College. Senga is a long-time supporter of Active Citizen Project along with her friend, artist David Hammons, who joined her on a tour of the site that was given by our farmers, Andrew Casner and Kadeesha Williams. Their friends A.C. Hudgins, Ian White, and Sarita Hudgins joined them.
Senga watches Andrew, Project EATS' Farm Manager, harvest radishes.
Andrew releases heat generated by organic matter in compost bin as David and Ian look on.

BROWNSVILLE: A COMMUNITY SUCCESS @ AMBOY MARKET!
A good community turn-out on October 25th for the Special Market Day at Amboy made it a win-win for everyone. The community took home affordable, just-picked, chemical-free vegetables for their home-cooked meals and ACP got one step closer to its goal of starting a weekly community market at the Brownsville @ Amboy site next spring! Our final Special Market this fall will be held on November 22nd, we look forward to seeing you there!!
BRIGHTON BEACH: TURNING TOMATOES INTO COMPOST
We were grateful for a very long season of tomato crops this year and look forward to another one next year! We plan to start our season early and extend it longer by growing tomatoes in our hoop houses. For now, we're turning the remains of our plants into compost on Volunteer Work Day at Brighton Beach @ Kingsborough Community College site.
MANHATTAN: PREPARING TO LAUNCH BRIE'S GARDEN
From Production to Quality Control Testing, Project EATS is preparing to launch Brie's Garden, its all-natural, chemical-free, handmade body and health products for its community, local, and on-line markets. Sales of these products support access to affordable, fresh, and nutritious food in Project EATS communities and paid apprenticeships for community youth and adults at Project EATS farm sites. Students participating in Project EATS through their schools will be starting their own "enterprises" this month to sell Brie's Garden products. Check back later this month for details.

OCTOBER 10th - 14th
WE'RE EXTENDING OUR GROWING SEASON!
Inside the hoop house.
Project EATS Farmers, volunteers, and KBCC visitors from Finland completed construction of the hoop house at the KBCC site on October 8th. We will continue to use cold hoops over raised beds at all of our sites to extend our growing season. However, this hoop house provides us with a large and more efficient environment for growing vegetables, year-round.
IT GREW!
Jon, his watermelon, and Kadeesha who surprised Jon with it at our office.
When Jon planted his watermelon seeds last spring at the UHHS site, few on the Project EATS team thought anything would grow. The growing space was small and shallow. None the less, Jon had faith and the office crew and UHHS's Summer Fellows got to eat just picked watermelon last week!
