Project EATS (Art. Food. Life.)
Using what we have. Creating what we need.
This Project EATS site was built on the campus of Kingsborough Community College, a City University of New York Campus in the Brighton Beach Community of Brooklyn.
Spring 2011
Created through a partnership between Kingsborough Community College and Active Citizen Project, this site was built by EATS Farmers, KBCC students, and volunteers from the College's faculty and administration. During the spring, students learned basic skills in how to seed, water, and weed the site. They learned the type of care and maintenance necessary to ensure the grown of healthy, tasty vegetables and fruit.
Summer 2012
Additional raised beds were built and EATS Summer Fellows along with KBCC students worked with EATS Farmers to care for and maintain the site. In addition to the basics of seeding, watering and weeding, they learned how to properly harvest and prepare vegetables for market. They gained basic knowledge and techniques for building and maintaining healthy soil and plants. EATS Farmers constructed and started a compost bin for the site.
EATS Farmers provided and supported the experiential learning components of KBCC summer courses and programs that utilized the farm.
Fall 2012
EATS Farmers, KBCC interns, and volunteers will complete construction of the cold hoop house that will help extend the farming season at this site. EATS farmers willwork with KBCC interns and volunteers to actively farm the site through early December.
