    Born into slavery during the civil war era, the le Born into slavery during the civil war era, the legendary George Washington Carver would become a world-renowned botanist and educator. As the head of the agricultural department at the Tuskegee Institute,  he created a mobile classroom to teach farmers innovative agricultural techniques, promoted environmentalism, and eventually became synonymous with  the peanut industry. He continues to be one of the best-known agrarians in US history.
